She was one of the loveliest people I have ever met. She was pale skinned, not really Olga’s kind of continental beauty, of Irish-Scottish heritage, and of a temperament that would rarely, if ever, explode. She was in many ways the opposite to Olga. Jean had been working in the family fish and chip shop. Jean was only a young woman at the time, maybe 22, and only a couple of years older than my mother. Jean was the woman who married my grandfather after the government had declared Olga dead. This was in the scene where he plays Jean, my step-grandmother. Pressure, folks.īut during the performance there was one moment where I was taken aback. Especially when you consider that he had less than 10 minutes rehearsal time with Jac, and that rehearsal took place while the audience was coming in. William Zappa did a fabulous job shifting from German to peasant to Olga‘s husband to an underground subversive. Our presentation about the play in Athens may have been successful on a lot of fronts, but when I think about it, it brought up a few issues too.
